Every USB-C cable fits every USB-C port, which is exactly why the wrong one is so easy to buy. The plug standardised; the cable inside it didn't. Two otherwise identical cables can differ by a factor of four in the power they carry and a factor of forty in how long they survive daily bending. The difference isn't visible at the counter — it's two questions you can answer before you buy.

How many watts does your USB-C cable need?

Match the cable to the hungriest device you charge: 60W covers every phone, iPad and the MacBook Air; 100W covers a MacBook Pro 14″; 240W covers any laptop sold today and future-proofs the desk. A higher-wattage cable is never harmful — devices draw only what they need.

The wattage system works like plumbing: charger, cable and device negotiate, and the narrowest pipe wins. A 100W charger through a 60W cable delivers 60W — no sparks, no warning, just a MacBook Pro charging at half pace and a user blaming the charger. This is the most common fast-charging complaint there is, and it's almost always the cable.

That's also why “overkill” doesn't exist in cables. A 240W-rated cable charging a phone carries 30W with 210 in reserve; the phone decides, not the cable. The practical upshot: buying above your current need is the only way a cable outlives the laptop it was bought for. USB-C wattage tiers run 60W (the unmarked default), 100W, and 240W — the ceiling of the standard, and the only rating you'll never need to replace.

Charging speed and data speed are different specs

Here is the trap that catches people moving files rather than just charging: a cable's wattage rating tells you nothing about how fast it moves data. The two specs are independent, and most charging cables — including excellent, expensive ones — carry data at USB 2.0 speeds, which is 480 megabits per second.

That is completely irrelevant if the cable's job is to charge your phone overnight. It matters enormously the day you plug in an external SSD and watch a video export crawl. Faster tiers exist — USB 3.2 runs 5 to 20 gigabits per second, and USB4 or Thunderbolt reaches 40 — but they cost more and are wasted on charging duty.

The practical rule: buy for the job. A charging cable at the bedside or in a bag needs watts, not gigabits. Keep one high-speed cable at the desk for drives and displays, and stop paying the Thunderbolt premium for cables that will only ever see a phone.

How to tell what a cable can actually do

Cables rarely advertise their limits, so three checks save you from guessing. First, look for the printed rating on the connector housing or jacket — 60W, 100W and 240W cables are usually marked, and a cable with no marking at all is almost always a 60W basic. Second, check for an e-marker: any cable rated above 60W contains a small chip that tells your charger what it can safely carry, which is precisely why a 240W cable can't be a bargain-bin purchase. Third, weigh it in your hand. Higher-wattage cables carry thicker conductors and are noticeably denser than a thin 60W lead.

If a cable claims 240W and feels featherlight with no markings, treat the claim with suspicion. Under-rated cables don't fail dramatically — they just quietly cap your charging speed, and you blame the wrong component for months.

Does a braided cable actually last longer?

What length do you need?
